2024 Jakob Moise Spatburgunder
$48.00
Jakob Moise's 2024 Spätburgunder represents one of the most exciting young voices in Baden, a region already commanding serious attention for its refined expressions of Pinot Noir. This is only Jakob's third commercial vintage, yet his work as a biodynamic vineyard consultant has given him access to some of the area's most coveted parcels and an understanding of terroir that typically takes decades to develop. He farms just over a hectare around Ehrenstetten, a town adjacent to the well-regarded Wasenhaus estate in the southwestern corner of Germany, where volcanic soils and a temperate climate create ideal conditions for elegant, mineral-driven Spätburgunder. The 2024 vintage showcases Jakob's remarkably light-touch approach to winemaking. He favors minimal extraction and shorter élevage, prioritizing transparency and purity over power or concentration. The result is a Pinot that feels almost translucent, expressing the volcanic minerality of sites like Kaiserstuhl, Belmont, and Kanzel without heavy winemaking intervention. Expect delicate red fruit—think wild strawberry and cranberry—alongside earthy undertones and a distinctive stony quality that speaks to the region's geology. The tannins are fine and silky, the acidity bright without being sharp. This is a wine that deserves a slight chill and food that won't overwhelm its elegance. Serve it alongside roasted chicken with herbs, grilled salmon, mushroom risotto, or charcuterie with cornichons and grainy mustard. It's also compelling on its own as an aperitif, especially if you appreciate the kind of restraint that defines great Burgundy or Oregon's best sites. Quantity will always be limited given the scale of production here. Jakob farms biodynamically, works with some of Baden's most compelling vineyard sites, and bottles wines that feel more like insider discoveries than mass-market releases. If you're tracking the next generation of German Pinot Noir, this is a producer worth following from the beginning. The 2024 won't sit around long.
