Lunaria Ruminat Primitivo
$25.00
Lunaria Ruminat Primitivo is a certified-organic expression from Puglia, Italy's southernmost wine region, where the Adriatic sun concentrates sugars and anthocyanins in thick-skinned grapes. The Lunaria estate farms biodynamically in the Salento peninsula, where ancient vines dig deep into chalky limestone soils that temper the variety's natural exuberance. This is Primitivo with restraint — no oak manipulation, wild fermentation in stainless steel, minimal sulfur — letting the fruit speak for itself rather than chasing the jammy overripeness that gives the grape a bad name. The Zaccagnini family founded Lunaria in the early 2000s with a mission to prove that organic viticulture could produce serious wines in a region historically known for bulk production. They farm 150 hectares without synthetic inputs, hand-harvest at optimal ripeness rather than maximum sugar, and ferment spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. The Ruminat bottling sees no wood, only stainless steel and concrete, preserving the bright acidity that makes Primitivo food-friendly instead of cloying. The estate is certified organic by both European and USDA standards, and every vineyard parcel is dry-farmed. The wine pours a bright ruby red with aromas of plum, carob, and sour cherry — no vanilla or spice, just clean fruit and a faint mineral edge. The palate is warm and fairly tannic with red-fruit-jam intensity, balanced by the acidity that comes from earlier harvesting and no malolactic softening. Drink it with grilled lamb, eggplant parmigiana, or anything involving tomato paste and fennel seed. It's a wine that wants food, not contemplation — the tannins need fat and the fruit needs salt.
