Malene Rose San Luis Obispo
$18.00
Malene is a rosé-only project based in San Luis Obispo, singularly dedicated to producing California rosé in a Provençal spirit. The name is an anagram of tourmaline, the semi-precious gemstone found throughout California that exhibits a distinctive watermelon-pink hue, and the reference is fitting: the wine is all about color, freshness, and the kind of effortless drinkability that made Provence famous. The fruit is sourced from sustainably farmed vineyards along the Central Coast, where the warm days and cool Pacific nights create growing conditions that mirror the Mediterranean climate of southern France. The blend varies slightly by vintage but centers on Grenache and Cinsault with supporting roles for Vermentino, Mourvèdre, and Carignane, the classic Provençal cast assembled on California soil. Pale and delicate pink in the glass with brilliant clarity. The nose opens with white peach, green strawberry, watermelon rind, and white flower, with a quiet chalky minerality running underneath. On the palate it is dry, focused, and refreshingly taut, with flavors of pomegranate, lemon pith, and stone fruit carried by lively acidity and a salty mineral thread from extended lees contact. The finish is clean and bright, with just enough texture to feel satisfying without any weight. This is the kind of rosé that disappears fast and for good reason. Pour it as an aperitif or alongside fish tacos, grilled shrimp, asparagus risotto, goat cheese, or anything with a little brightness and acidity to meet it with.
