The Furst Gewurtzraminer
$26.00
The Furst Gewurtzraminer comes from the village of Ipsheim in Franconia, not Alsace, and that geography makes all the difference. Paul Furst's estate sits on limestone-rich soils in a cooler continental climate, which reins in the varietal's typical exuberance and delivers a restrained, food-friendly expression of Gewurztraminer that feels almost unrecognizable next to its Alsatian cousins. The nose doesn't announce itself with the usual rose petal and lychee pyrotechnics—instead, honeysuckle and pear emerge slowly in the glass, graceful rather than bombastic. The Furst family has been making wine in Franconia since 1638, farming organically and bottling wines that reflect terroir over textbook varietal character. Franconia's limestone soils and cooler temperatures pull the Gewurztraminer grape in a different direction, emphasizing texture and balance instead of the heavy spice and perfume that define most bottlings. Paul Furst's approach honors this restraint, letting the vineyard speak rather than imposing a house style, and the result is a wine that feels more like a regional statement than a varietal showcase. On the palate, lychee appears in slender form—present but never dominating—while a faint pear sweetness gets checked by bright acidity and a rippling, satiny texture. The finish lingers without overstaying, medium in length and clean. This is the rare Gewurztraminer that won't steamroll your dinner plate. Where Alsatian examples demand spicy Asian cuisine or pungent cheese to stand up to them, the Furst version plays well with roast chicken, seared scallops, summer salads with stone fruit and goat cheese, or Thanksgiving turkey when you want a white wine that won't clash with cranberry sauce. It works equally well on a patio in warmer months or at a table when the occasion calls for something genuinely different without sacrificing drinkability. In stock at Off Premise in Lincoln Park.
