2023 Maculan Pino e Toi 750ML

$18.00
The 2023 Maculan Pino e Toi comes from one of Veneto's most thoughtful producers, a family estate that's been quietly perfecting the balance between international ambition and regional integrity since the 1950s. This is a blend of Pinot Bianco and Tocai Friulano—hence the playful portmanteau name—two varieties that share a knack for combining freshness with a kind of soft-spoken richness. Fausto Maculan planted these varieties in the Breganze DOC, a hilly zone north of Vicenza where the cooling influence of the Alps keeps acidity bright even in warm years. The 2023 vintage expresses that balance beautifully. Expect white flowers, pear, and green apple on the nose, with a hint of almond skin that's typical of Tocai Friulano. The palate is round but never flabby, thanks to the Pinot Bianco's mineral backbone. There's a touch of weight here, a subtle texture that makes this more than just a simple summer sipper, but it stops short of oak or cream—this is about fruit and terroir, not winemaking pyrotechnics. The finish is clean, with a gentle salinity that keeps you reaching for another glass. Maculan is perhaps best known for their sweet Torcolato, a benchmark of Venetian dessert wine, but the estate's dry whites deserve equal attention. Pino e Toi is an approachable entry point to the range, a wine that proves you don't need single-varietal purity or trendy grapes to make something compelling. Pair this with grilled white fish, lemony pastas, or a simple fritto misto. It's also excellent with lighter vegetable dishes—asparagus risotto, zucchini fritti, or a spring salad with soft cheese. The 2023 is drinking well now and will hold for another year or two if you want to let it settle, though there's no real reason to wait. This is food wine in the best sense: unfussy, expressive, and built to disappear alongside a meal.
