Cantine Valpane 'Rosso Pietro' Barbera del Monferrato DOC
$22.00
Cantine Valpane Rosso Pietro Barbera del Monferrato DOC is a throwback to the Piemonte that most American drinkers miss — the one built on site-expressive Barbera from the rolling amphitheater vineyards of the Monferrato, not the richer, darker styles of Asti or Alba. This is 100% Barbera grown in clay-limestone soils that have been planted to vines since the 1700s, farmed by the same family for five generations, and bottled under a cuvée name that honors the red-bearded grandfather who bought the estate outright in 1902. Monferrato Barbera leans toward lighter body and soaring aromatics rather than extraction and oak, and Rosso Pietro delivers exactly that regional signature with precision. The estate sits due east of Turin in the heart of the Monferrato hills, a warm microclimate where historic family holdings like Cantine Valpane have quietly specialized in Piemontese grapes that rarely leave the region — Freisa, Grignolino, Barbera. Pietro Giuseppe Arditi began working the property under sharecropping terms in 1900, purchased it two years later, and today his descendant, also named Pietro Arditi, farms the same parcels and bottles the same traditional varieties his great-grandfather did. The focus here is purity and place, not international fashion, and the estate's work with old-vine Barbera reflects a continuity most wineries can no longer claim. The wine shows the deep ruby color Barbera is known for, but the profile skews bright and lifted rather than heavy — black cherry, blackcurrant, dried herbs, earth, and a bitter dusting of dark cocoa that shows up vintage-dependent. Barbera's naturally low tannin and bracing acidity come through cleanly here, carried with real refinement and drinkability rather than power. This is a wine for the table, not the cellar — open it with grilled sausage, ragu over fresh pasta, roasted mushrooms, or anything with tomato and garlic. It's expressive enough to drink on its own but structured enough to cut through rich food, which is the whole point of Monferrato Barbera in the first place. Cantine Valpane Rosso Pietro Barbera del Monferrato DOC is available now at Off Premise in Lincoln Park for pickup at 1128 W Armitage Ave, local Chicago delivery, or nationwide shipping.
