Quinta Do Javali Douro Clos Bonifata Branco 2019

$28.00
Quinta do Javali's Clos Bonifata Branco 2019 is a single-vineyard white from the Douro Valley that stands apart for its combination of extreme terroir and radical winemaking. The fruit comes from a natural amphitheater formation at 600 meters altitude in Ervedosa do Douro, planted on schist soils to Arinto and Viosinho, fermented spontaneously in concrete, and aged for 18 months in concrete spheres built with soil excavated from the Bonifata vineyard itself. No additions of any kind touch the wine from harvest to bottle. This is as direct an expression of Douro terroir as you will find in a white wine, and it reads as a document of place rather than a product of the cellar. António Mendes owns and operates Quinta do Javali, an 18-hectare estate on the left bank of the Douro River in Nagozelo do Douro with vineyard roots documented to the 1650s. Mendes farms the property organically and biodynamically, plowing with horses and working by the biodynamic calendar, a genuinely singular commitment in a region dominated by mechanized viticulture. The Clos Bonifata vineyard sits apart from the main estate in Ervedosa do Douro, a site Mendes considers the jewel of the property, defined by its altitude, schist bedrock, and the cooling influence of elevation in a region better known for heat. Harvest is by hand, fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeast, and the aging vessels are custom concrete spheres Mendes had built using soil from the vineyard to maintain a physical continuity between vine and cellar. The 2019 vintage pours lemon-hued with greenish tones, the nose strikingly mineral and floral with granite-inflected aromatics and a cool, precise purity that reflects both the altitude and the hands-off cellar work. On the palate, bright acid freshness anchors the wine, balanced by a pleasant density and texture through the mid-palate, with a chiseled mineral spine and a long, clean finish that speaks directly to the schist terroir and the purity of the winemaking. This is a wine for oysters, grilled fish with herbs, or hard sheep's-milk cheese, though it also holds its own as an aperitif if you prefer white wines with structure and salinity over soft fruit.
