While Reinhold Haart's name is most closely associated with Piesport's legendary Goldtröpfchen, the estate's holdings in the neighbouring Wintricher Ohligsberg reveal another side of Theo Haart's winemaking, one rooted in a vineyard of equal historic pedigree but distinct character. The Ohligsberg, classified as a Grand Cru site, sits on steep Devon slate terraces above the village of Wintrich, just upstream from Piesport along the Mosel's winding course. The site's ancient soils and severe gradient produce wines of notable complexity and precision, with a mineral tension that sets them slightly apart from the rounder, more opulent character of the Goldtröpfchen. 2012 was a challenging but rewarding vintage on the Mosel. A cool, irregular growing season demanded patience and careful selection in the vineyard, and the estates that waited were rewarded with wines of real elegance and focus rather than sheer weight. Haart's Ohligsberg Spätlese from this year reflects that character beautifully: refined and precise rather than lavish, with a core of ripe stone fruit, white peach, and apricot underpinned by a citrus freshness and the site's characteristic stony, herbal minerality. The sweetness is restrained and perfectly integrated, carried by bright, racy acidity through to a long, focused finish. Now well into its drinking window and showing the beginnings of the complexity that comes with a decade of bottle age, with honeyed tertiary notes beginning to emerge alongside the primary fruit. A wine worth lingering over. Serve well chilled.
