2023 Gillot Pinot Noir
$24.00
Rheinhessen, Germany For centuries, Carolin Spanier-Gillot's family has been crafting wine along the Rhine on the legendary Grand Cru sites of the famed Roter Hang, cultivating biodynamic Riesling and Pinot Noir across organically certified vineyards between Bodenheim and Oppenheim. When Oliver Spanier married Carolin Gillot in 2016, it brought together two of Rheinhessen's leading estates, with he as winemaker for both, and the wines guided by a philosophy of beautiful purity, restraint, and the promise of a long life. The estate has worked biodynamically since 2005, with the conviction that exceptional vineyards possess a genius loci, a spirit of place, that expresses itself honestly in the glass. Reds are matured for 24 months in Burgundy barrels, with hand selection in the vineyard and spontaneous fermentations only. The 2023 vintage proved a career high point for the estate, yielding wines of up-front power and self-confident drama. In the glass, this wine is translucent ruby with a bright, inviting core. Cherries, raspberries, and plums lead on the nose, seasoned with light peppercorns and lifted by an easy limestone and loess minerality. The palate is medium-bodied and precise, with fresh red fruit giving way to dried herbs, a hint of forest floor, and the iron-tinged earthiness of the Roter Hang. Fine, black-tea-etched tannins frame the wine elegantly, carrying it to a lingering, salt-kissed finish. True to the estate's style, it favors the savory and the mineral over the overtly fruity.
