Hamilton 151 Overproof Rum is a marriage of pot still and column still rums from Guyana, blended by Ed Hamilton, the rum writer and importer who built his reputation documenting Caribbean distillation. Bottled at 75.5% alcohol, this is the structural backbone that classic mid-century tiki drinks were designed around, with enough proof to cut through citrus and orgeat without vanishing and enough molasses-forward funk to remind you there's actual rum in the glass. The blend sources from Demerara Distillers in Guyana, pulling from both their column stills for clean base rum and their heavier pot stills for aromatic weight. That dual-still approach gives you brown sugar and burnt caramel on the nose, with a finish carrying licorice and dark tropical fruit. The pot still component adds the funk; the column still keeps it from tipping into solvent territory. Hamilton built this expressly as an ingredient rum, calibrated to the proof and flavor profile that Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic were actually using in the 1940s when they wrote the original tiki canon. This is float rum, not sipping rum. A half ounce over crushed ice in a Zombie or Navy Grog snaps the whole drink into focus, giving it the backbone that makes the difference between a watery punch and something with real architecture. It works beautifully in classic rum punch ratios, where the high proof lets you dial in exactly how much strength you want without over-diluting, and a barspoon in a daiquiri adds gravitas when you need it. The molasses depth plays well with falernum, the proof holds up to lime and pineapple, and the price point means you can use it the way it's intended rather than treating it like liquid gold.
