Smoky Scot Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a five-year-old heavily peated expression distilled at Caol Ila on Islay's northeastern coast and bottled by independent bottler Aceo at 46% ABV. Matured entirely in bourbon oak casks, it delivers the classic Islay flavor profile shaped by coastal exposure and phenol-rich malt without the premium attached to the distillery's own label. The younger age statement keeps the maritime character direct and unapologetic, with peat smoke sitting front and center rather than mellowing into the wood. Caol Ila, one of the largest distilleries on Islay, supplies much of the heavily peated malt used in blended Scotch, but independent bottlings like Smoky Scot offer a chance to taste the distillery's spirit on its own terms at a fraction of the cost of official releases. The distillery draws water from Loch Nam Ban and overlooks the Sound of Islay, where salt spray and maritime air seep into every cask stored in the warehouses. Aceo, the independent bottler behind this release, sources casks from notable distilleries and bottles them at natural color and non-chill filtered strength to preserve the full aromatic weight. The five-year maturation in ex-bourbon oak keeps vanilla and oak in check, letting the peat and sea take the lead. On the nose, expect woody char, pronounced saltiness, and thick plumes of peat smoke. The palate opens with classic Islay markers: iodine, seaweed, tar, and a background hum of smoldering peat that slowly gives way to softer floral layers, toasted seeds, and malt sweetness. The finish lingers with a cooling menthol note threading through the smoke, leaving a faint malty sweetness behind.
